Now, walkie-talkies to aid SWM

headset removalSome of these trained writers on the web are at such a high level that i ponder if any of them have ever printed a book? well from time to time i like to highlight these outstanding items and here’s one i thought was interesting the other day.

As part of its efforts to improve and streamline solid waste management (SWM) in the city, the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike will soon begin distribution of two-way radios (walkie-talkies) to officials handling the service.

According to BBMP Commissioner M Lakshminarayana, walkie-talkie handsets will be used to relay messages on uncleared garbage. When members of the public call the BBMP’s control rooms with complaints on uncleared waste, staff will relay the information to the officials concerned via walkie-talkie.

Interestingly, the plan could cut costs as it does not involve purchase of new equipment. Instead, nearly 300 two-way radios, that are currently used by senior officials or fitted to their service vehicles, will be redistributed to other staff.

Lakshminarayana explained that currently walkie-talkies were provided to staff of the rank of assistant executive engineers and above. “However, the service was not effective as officials were using mobile phones,” he said.

“Now, in order to utilise the service more effectively, we are planning to provide this service only to officials working in SWM such as health inspectors, assistant engineers (including ward engineers) and others,” he said.

Explaining further, Lakshminarayana said walkie-talkie handsets given to officials working in welfare, roads and other departments will be withdrawn.

“These officials do not require this service,” he said.

He also said because of unnecessary lines, walkie-talkie communication was not effective.

“All these days, walkie-talkie service was hierarchy-based and given to senior officials. But now onwards, it will be an activity-based service,” he added.

The Commissioner said he had asked the joint commissioner (Health), who is in-charge of SWM, to provide a list of officials working in the department.

However, some Councillors are sceptical. A senior councillor from the BJP, who wished to remain anonymous, said “Our officials do not have commitment. If we complain about garbage on the streets to them over phone, they will not make an attempt to clear it.”

“Now, complaints will be conveyed to officials via walkie-talkie from control room staff. How can one expect them to clear the garbage?,” he questioned.

If you’re anything like us, you’re just as likely to be working from home as you are at the airport or the coffee shop. But none of these places are ideal work environments, are they? Maybe you’re dealing with screaming kids, people talking loudly on their phones, or even just the background noise. When you’re trying to get important work done on-the-go, you need to create a productive atmosphere and reduce distractions. That’s why this week we’re taking a look at a small investment that could make a big impact on your mobile office life: noise canceling headphones.

Boomerang Gmail Plugin Adds a Mobile Client: Schedule Your Emails from Anywhere
One of the coolest things to come out in the past few years was the Boomerang plugin for Gmail. It let users of the Firefox and Chrome web browsers ‘schedule’ their emails to run at a later date. Up too late at the office working unpaid overtime on a project but don’t want your boss to know? Schedule that crucial email to him for 8am instead of sending it now at 4am. Have something that you can’t talk about until next Tuesday, but you’ve written the email now? Schedule it to send later. Needless to say, Boomerang is one of those great products that completely revolutionized how we use email. Now, they’re announcing an exciting new product: a mobile application that lets you schedule your emails while on-the-go straight from your phone.

Plantronics Headphones Provide Simple Style, Better Communications And Stronger Connections

For years people have been telling me that relations, love and happiness are the most important things in life…Now I realise that I’m able to take or leave all that as long as I have this earpiece in the world.

Probably the most reputable brands in terms of audio communications systems is Plantronics. Viewed as an innovator on the headphone business, Plantronics is famous for their products which offer cutting edge functions and optimum advantages with no steep prices. The leaders of the product established the company because they desired to create the ultimate headphone for air travel and aviation. This commitment for technological developments is still highly observed in the most current styles of Plantronics headsets. You might have seen or used the subsequent devices: cellular headsets, compact headsets, headsets having noise cancellation features or perhaps own audio phones. The technology that made these inventions possible was all developed by Plantronics.

The mark of a Plantronics headset is its efficiency in style designed to offer better communications. This implies sleek, uncomplicated-looking devices that are easy to use and jam-packed with the suitable functions to enable you to converse properly. The product philosophy of Plantronics is to picture the human form as canvas and as motivation. One particular clear proof of this is that headsets of this label are usually comfortable to use after long-term and daily use.

In case you’re thinking about buying Plantronics headphones to your personal use or maybe as devices in your company, it’s strongly recommended that you obtain your transactions from a reputable web-based retail store. Internet-based shops usually have a wider supply than their physical competitors; that’s mainly as a result of the strong connections they have with the leading manufacturers and global suppliers. This relationship also allows online retailers to provide items at significantly lower prices. Also, their minimal overhead costs (basically no rent payments and utility bills for storefront space, much less store personnel) make it easy for them to pass on the benefits to their customers.

Never assume all internet retailers supplying Plantronics headsets are the same, though. You still have to scout for the most trusted retail store that could offer you low prices, efficient delivery, and also a safe and satisfying buying experience. It’s also essential to ensure that the shop you choose sells only 100% genuine headsets that come with a brand’s guarantee-be aware of poor-quality imported goods and very low cost knock-offs that are provided by unscrupulous internet based dealers.

Headphones are not only a piece of audio equipment-they’re basically your links to improving your interactions along with the rest of the wired world. Pick the best Plantronics headset unit for your needs with the help of a trustworthy audio accessory retail store today.

Variety of Spy Earpieces….

police vehiclesThis piece is posted with the strict authorization of radio accessory.co.uk, which is the original blog. please get agreement from that site before reposting this short article.

Spy earpieces are available in three types – bluetooth spy earpieces, mp3 spy earpieces and ordinary wired ones. The first (bluetooth spy earpiece) and second (mp3 spy earpiece) types are most widespread and popular.

Prevailence of bluetooth spy earpieces is determined by steadily growing popularity of Bluetooth standard of wireless data transmission in GSM mobile phones – Bluetooth service can be found virtually in each GSM mobile phone. One can explain why Bluetooth spy earpieces are in great demand in each educational institution – such devices offer students easier ways of personal development and opportunity to achieve magnificent results at examinations. Bluetooth spy earpiece gives all this quickly, cheaply and easily!

We may see in the technology of Bluetooth spy earpiece the future in new methods of quick reception of the audio information from any area – with the help of GSM mobile phones and invisible spy ear pieces. Your partner transfers the information you need to your GSM mobile phone which is further transferred by means of Bluetooth technology to the Bluetooth spy earpiece plugged in your ear. Simultaneously, your partner can hear your replies using invisible microphone.

Let’s consider no less successful decision – mp3 spy ear pieces. The main advantage of mp3 spy earpieces is that you needn’t to attract the partner to this process. You can record all important information in advance on your mp3 device and listen later when it is necessary! Since you are familiar with your own voice and record contents, it will be easier to understand and analyze audio information.

As to the last kind – wired spy ear piece, it is a bit out-of-date approach to the problem. Usual wired earpiece does not differ from Bluetooth one except that the micro earpiece is communicated to the GSM mobile phone by wire, often inconvenient in use.

Oculus Rift: 2013’s best, most innovative hardware

Whats your favorite feature of my headset? In my opinion, I much like the design job – It is cooler than an Inuits underpants!

headset lifterProgress and innovation. These are things we constantly aspire to in the technological sphere, and without a doubt there have been a number of innovations in 2013. Which of these have been the most momentous and profound however? You might think my first choice would be Playstation 4 or Xbox One, however one device stands out for me above all the others, partly because its a huge leap forward in what up until now has been a minefield of failed devices, and partly just because its really cool.

Yes, the Oculus Rift is the latest and greatest in virtual reality (or VR) technology.

It has already won awards including the Popular Mechanics Breakthrough Award as well as a Golden Joystick Award for Innovation of the Year, proving that Im not the only person who thinks that it should be at the top of the innovation list.

Oculus VR, a company founded by Palmer Lucky and id Software co-founder John Carmack, initially funded the Rift through an amazingly successful Kickstarter campaign. Their initial asking amount was US$250 000, which was funded in four hours. They went on to raise over US$2.4-million through Kickstarter alone and an additional US$13.6-million through other avenues resulting in a total of US$16 million. Money!

Whats it all about?

What is the Oculus Rift? It sounds like something out of a science fiction movie, and I suppose it might well be exactly that. Its a Head-Mounted Display (HMD), which allows gamers to see in stereoscopic 3D, and provides an immersive gaming experience as players can turn their heads within the game and play in a fully 3D environment.

The initial prototype was made using a 5.6? screen, but for a variety of reasons, Oculus VR changed their design to a 7? screen, which means the headset is somewhat bulkier than originally intended. On the plus side however the specs of the new panel means that there is less lag and motion blur when the player turns their head quickly as the pixel switching time is faster. The stereoscopic 3D is no longer 100% overlapping either, which means that the left and right eyes see a little extra either side and it mimics normal human vision in a much more realistic manner.

The field of view is 90 degrees, more than double that of many similar devices and its this that really sets the Oculus Rift apart from so many other VR HMDs. It is intended to entirely fill the wearers field of view and the real world is blocked out to such an extent that the immersive experience is heightened exponentially.

In the developer version, which is the only one currently available, the resolution is 1280800. In the consumer version which is still in development, the expected resolution is 19201080. The image for each eye is shown as a pincushioned image, a distortion that is then corrected by lenses within the headset, generating a spherically mapped image for each eye.

Hilarity intensifies
Doomed

John Carmack, one of the legendary creators of equally legendary shooter Doom, requested a special firmware for the head tracker that makes it run at 250Hz as opposed to the usual 125Hz, as the tracker latency is vital for the realism in response time. The latest version uses a combination of 3-axis gyros, accelerometers and magnetometers making it capable of head orientation tracking without any resulting drift. This means you can look around naturally, much as you would in real life, and every movement of your head is tracked in real-time. This creates a subtle, intuitive and most importantly, completely natural experience. Its also designed to be comfortable to wear, and so is relatively lightweight, weighing only 369g, and Oculus VR compares it to the weight of a heavy pair of ski goggles.

It sounds very impressive, but its important to remember that games will need to be specially designed to work correctly with the Rift, and Oculus VR has produced a software development kit to assist developers in integrating the Oculus Rift into their games successfully.

Team Fortress 2 was the first game to add support for the developer version and a number of other well-known titles have since followed suit.

More importantly however are games such as The Gallery: Six Elements, which was the first game that was designed specifically with the Oculus Rift in mind as opposed to merely adding Rift support to an existing game.

Impressively the Oculus Rift also runs on Mac, Linux and Windows, so theyre not cutting out any operating systems. You can order a development kit for US$300 although costs for the consumer version are not yet known, but Oculus VR have insisted that Our goal is to deliver the highest quality virtual reality experience at a price that all gamers (and their parents) can afford.

oculus rift

Its important to note that I think part of what makes this piece of technology so exciting and accessible is the fact that Oculus VR has kept its Kickstarter backers informed every step of the way. Long after reaching their target it still posted links, tests and demos it was conducting, awards and press it had received, and updates with regards to how the development of the technology was progressing. Why? Well everyone who funded this campaign, and even those who didnt, have a vested interest in how this turns out, and their excitement and the hard work theyve put in to get here is infectious and well documented you cant help but get excited along with them.

For me the Oculus Rift is without a doubt the most exciting and innovative piece of hardware that has made its way onto the market in 2013, and its progressed even since I saw it at E3, so in 6 short months, theyve taken some major strides forward. Although only the development kit is currently available, a consumer version is due to hit the market sometime soon and I foresee a very bright future for this, the next step in immersive Virtual Reality technology.

Are Earphones Harmful to Your Ears?

So to resume my run of content on this blog, I have planned to share one of our favourite articles this week. I used to be tentative to include it to a blog as I really did not want to offend the original author, but I trust he/she is happy that I loved reading their article and wanted to share it with my readers.

police 6Actually the answer is yes, headphones can be very damaging to your ears.

A team from the University of Leicester recently proved that noises louder than 110 decibels cause damage to a special type nerve cell coating, which in turn can cause tinnitus (basically a buzzing or whining in the ears – and here’s me thinking that it just made things sound ‘a bit tinny’) and even temporary deafness in some cases.

According to medical news today.com, who reported on the University’s findings, the myelin sheath is a type of coating that covers the nerve cells that connect the ears with the brain. Any noise over 100 decibels begins to wear away this coating, meaning that the signals will eventually stop reaching the brain. Given time, the myelin sheath will usually (but not always) heal itself and reform, resulting in the damage only being temporary. Still, it is something to think about.

As for more permanent damage, well, the facts are actually startling. According to TIME magazine’s Laura Blue,

“Hearing loss is more common than ever before. About 16% of American adults have an impaired ability to hear speech, and more than 30% of Americans over age 20 — an estimated 55 million people — have lost some high-frequency hearing”.

These shocking statistics were put forward in the ‘Archives of Internal Medicine’ journal and first published in 2008. Following this publication, Blue interviewed Brian Fligor, who was, at the time, the director of diagnostic audiology at Children’s Hospital Boston. In the interview, Fligor said,

“If you’re using the earbuds that come with an iPod and you turn the volume up to about 90% of maximum and you listen a total of two hours a day, five days a week, our best estimates are that the people who have more sensitive ears will develop a rather significant degree of hearing loss — on the order of 40 decibels (dB). That means the quietest sounds audible are 40 dB loud. Now, this is high-pitched hearing loss, so a person can still hear sounds and understand most speech. The impact is going to be most clearly noted when the background-noise level goes up, when you have to focus on what someone is saying. Then it can really start to impair your ability to communicate”.

So, the question now becomes, what can you do to lower the risk?

Sam Costello of About.com suggests turning down the volume, which is reasonably obvious, really. However, (s)he also suggests accessing the ‘volume control’ on your iPod or device and lowering the maximum volume setting (synch it to the computer for more such options), as well as listening for shorter periods of time and switching from earbuds to ‘over the ear’ phones. Earbuds are the most dangerous headphone type, apparently.

Just for the record, the average American iPod can generate about 115 decibels, which is equivalent to attending a reasonably loud rock concert (although not a Motorhead gig obviously – now that’s a band which almost guarantees absolute deafness for a least a few days afterwards, trust me).

However, the good news is that if you’re in the EU, your iPod is limited to 100db maximum output by law. Even though you are still at risk if you turn the volume all the way up and listen to it all day long, that risk is considerably less on our side of the pond.

Making Her Into Reality

Making “Her” Into Reality
Can not get over how cheap the radio accessory is now, an incredible deal for a top-end product!

events 1969Spike Jonze’s latest movie, “Her,” creates a future where technology is less visible, yet more ubiquitous than today. The main character uses an earpiece and handheld device to communicate with an operating system that follows a user across any platform, rarely utilizing the traditional desktop screens except when at work. And the main way of interacting with the operating system is through natural, conversational speech.

Even though it is science fiction, “Her” seems to be the end state for many current acquisitions and research from real-life tech companies. These companies are pursuing enhanced artificial intelligence and speech recognition. And the companies who don’t jump on this future will be left in the digital dust.

Established artificial intelligence
The most well-known characters in AI today are IBM’s Watson and Apple’s Siri.

Watson takes human’s natural language and filters through data to find the most probable answers. It can take “unstructured data,” that is, data computers typically cannot read because it isn’t structured in tables, rows, or columns, and turn it into knowledge accessible not through complex queries but simple, vocal questions. It’s now being used to help doctors find better cancer treatments and financial planners find better investments. IBM hopes Watson will bring in $1 billion in revenue by 2018.

Siri first debuted in Apple’s iPhone 4S, allowing for simple functions like searching the web and initiating a call or writing a text message. The latest iOS version added more functionality for Siri, like sourcing information from Wikipedia and Twitter.

Apple’s latest acquisitions point to further enhancements for Siri. In 2013, the company picked up intelligent calendar application Cue, which helps layout a user’s day similar to Google Now. It also bought Topsy, which allowed customers to analyze and search social posts. And, a recently published patent points to expanding Siri from phones to docks.

Up and coming AI
Now, Google spent a rumored $400 million on an artificial intelligence company called DeepMind. DeepMind’s website describes its software as useful in “simulations, e-commerce, and games,” and the company has an impressive talent list with a former child chess prodigy and a Skype co-creator. This piles on to Google’s other recent acquisitions of robot maker Boston Dynamics and smart home hardware maker Nest. If Google can succeed in integrating these seemingly disparate companies, it seems like having a conversation with your thermostat isn’t too far off.

Losers of an AI future
While these companies are priming themselves to own any science fiction-like future, there are companies doomed to languish if they don’t change their path.

This includes the lowly hardware maker. The future presented in “Her” doesn’t contain several devices in multiple form factors as we have now, but one handheld device and one wearable earpiece that connects to a cloud-based operating system. IBM, a case study in staying relevant, keeps shedding its hardware operations with its latest $2.3 billion sale of its server business to Lenovo. As the main players build their artificially intelligent ecosystems, the hardware becomes less important as it’s commoditized, and the main differentiation becomes software. Companies might also want more control over their hardware and the user experience, and produce their own. For example, Apple recently purchased a cutting-edge chip maker, Primesense. Microsoft stepped into producing its own hardware with its Surface tablets.

Just a movie?
On the other hand, “Her,” like most future predictions, could be far off base. While it seems artificial intelligence will play a large role in future computing, we may combine such technology with even more screens. The point where computers become more intelligent than humans, called the singularity, may not come as quickly as predicted, and these future bets may be too far off to have any impact on company values today.

TECH NEWS New Electric Buses, improving arrival time!

events 7th april 2012What is your favourite feature of my radio accessory? Personally, I much like the design job – Its cooler than an Inuit’s underpants!

Eight experimental electric buses will be operating in Milton Keynes from late January onwards. The fleet will begin operating along the busy Number 7 route, which covers the 15 miles between Wolverton and Bletchley. They are the first electric buses to operate in the UK.

UK-based bus manufacturer Wrightbus have built these new electric buses in conjunction with Japanese company Mitsui and UK engineering group Arup.

Wireless ‘booster’ plates in the road, placed at the beginning/end of the route, give the buses a charge that allows them to operate for a full day. They are then charged overnight at the bus depot.

The buses will need to stop over the booster plates, before lowering the bus’ own receiver plates and resting there for 10 minutes’ charge time. The journey will then resume, exactly the same way a regular bus ride does.

The process is called ‘inductive charging’ and it involves electricity passing though wire coils in the plates that creates a magnetic field. The field then shares its voltage with the bus’ receiver plates, charging them up.

Similar electric bus trials are being implemented in Italy, the Netherlands and Germany. In 2013, South Korea unveiled a 7.5-mile stretch of road, which recharges electric vehicles as they drive over it, without requiring any charge time at all.

In an interview with the BBC, John Bint of Milton Keynes Council said, “Electric buses have huge potential and we’re exploring how they can help us take better care of the environment without compromising passenger service,”

If these trial models prove to be successful, the Council plans to run them all across the town.

The environmental impact of this scheme is certainly considerable, with local councils potentially being able to significantly reduce their area’s carbon footprint. In addition, the future development of electric buses can only help the similar evolution of the electric car, an invention that has the potential to seriously lower the world’s carbon emissions.

Arup consultant John Miles who is also an engineering professor at Cambridge University, told BBC that, “These electric buses will be expected to do everything a diesel bus does (…) They will be operating on a demanding urban route, and that’s all part of the trial’s aim – to prove that electric buses can be tough as well as green.”

Two Way Radio Options

The basis of the post is to make you consider what in life is significant and what does getting the new radio accessory really mean to people

Two way radios are used for communication purposes. They let a user send as well as receive signals over different channels. These radios find use in variety of applications. They use radio waves for communication and these radio waves have different frequencies. Therefore, Two Way Radios operate on different frequencies. These frequencies may differ from one place to another. Also the transmission rate depends upon the frequency that the radio uses. When low frequencies are used, data transmission can take place over a short distance. In case a high frequency is used, data transmission takes place over a larger distance.

The CB (citizens band) radio is an option with both mobile and handheld styles that provide 40-channels and have an output of 4 watts. They are generally sold as an individual radio and you would need to buy one for each person. The CB radio tends to be a little larger and bulkier than the other radio options.

It is common to find that a Two Way Radios covering the Family Radio Service (FRS) channels will cover the General Mobile Radio Service (GMRS) channels as well. FRS radios have a maximum power of 1/2 watt, so you don’t want to roam too far from each other and hope to communicate. If you purchase a radio with both FRS and GMRS capability, you can operate on the FRS channels without a license, however, to operate on the GMRS channels you will need to obtain an FCC license, but not everyone in the family needs one. The FCC license is issued to facilitate the activities of an adult individual AND his or her immediate family members. Family members include a spouse, children, parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, nephews, nieces, and in-laws. One license can cover the whole family, but the licensee is responsible for everyone operating under their license and will need to insure all users follow the rules. GMRS radios operate in the UHF band so the radios are compact and light weight. The power of these radios is generally from 1 to 5 watts, and they are most often sold in pairs for about the price of one handheld CB radio.

One of the latest and little known new services is the extreme radio service (eXRS) that uses new technology referred to as “Frequency Hopping Spread Spectrum” technology and operates in the 900 MHz band. The eXRS two way radio boasts of being able to provide superior communications over a greater range when compared, under the same conditions, to the FRS and GMRS radios, plus they require no license like the GMRS does. When sold in pairs they are about the same price range as the FRS/GMRS Two Way Radios.

Finally, the marine VHF band radios are another option. The FCC eliminated the individual licensing requirement for voluntary ships operating domestically which are not required by law to carry a radio. So your personal, non-commercial, watercraft is exempt from a licensing requirement. Portable, handheld versions are generally found in the power range of 1 to 5 watts. They are sold as individual radios like the CB handhelds. The Cost of these radios is higher than the others, but if you are a fisherman, there is a price you are willing to pay for your safety through communication. Not only are these radios capable of land to water communications, but land to land as well. This is often an overlooked capability of “marine” radios.
